SEO for AI Startups: A 90-Day Playbook That Ranks

Most AI startups skip SEO because 'LLMs killed search'. They didn't — they changed what wins. Here's the 90-day plan that still produces compounding traffic in 2026.

Days 1–14: keyword mining without guessing

Pull the last 90 days of your support tickets, sales call transcripts, and Discord/Slack channels. Every unique question is a candidate keyword. This out-performs Ahrefs seed lists 4:1 for early-stage.

Cluster the questions into 8–12 topics. Each topic becomes a page. Don't chase head terms yet — chase the questions your paying users actually ask.

Days 15–45: topical clusters, not scattered posts

Write one pillar page per topic (2,000–3,000 words) and 4–8 supporting posts that link back to it. Internal links are the single biggest ranking lever a small site controls.

Every post must answer the query in the first 80 words. LLM overviews cite the first clear answer they find.

Days 46–75: programmatic where it earns intent

Programmatic SEO works when each page answers a real, unique query (e.g. '/alternatives/[competitor]', '/[use-case]-template'). It fails when it's 500 near-duplicate pages fighting each other.

Rule of thumb: if a human reader wouldn't bookmark the page, Google won't rank it.

Days 76–90: AI search + citations

In 2026, showing up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews matters as much as blue links. Optimise for extractability: clear H2s, short definitions, factual tables, and named entities.

Add FAQ schema, HowTo schema and clear author bios. LLMs weight source clarity more than backlink counts.

Key takeaways

  • Mine keywords from tickets, calls, and Discord — not tools.
  • Cluster > scatter. Pillar + 6 supporting posts beats 20 orphan posts.
  • Programmatic only where each page has unique intent.
  • Structure for LLM extraction: definitions, tables, schema, authors.

Frequently asked

Is SEO dead for AI startups?

No. Organic search still drives the highest-intent, lowest-CAC traffic — but 'winning' now means ranking in AI overviews AND blue links.

How long until SEO produces revenue for an AI startup?

Realistically 4–6 months for the first ranked pages, 9–12 months for compounding traffic. Anyone promising 30 days is arbitraging a paid channel and calling it SEO.
